Cecelia, from Tonga, brought her huge, family tapa cloth in for us to look at. It is made out of bark that has been beaten to become quite thin but is still very strong. When the bark is still on the tree it is called hiapo, when it has been removed the bark is called tutu. Finally after it has been beaten and has become cloth it is called ngatu.
She said it was used at weddings and could also be used on other special occasions. Sometimes it may get used as a blanket but it is never put on the floor. Take a look at all the nature in this beautiful piece of art. We hope to make our own on Thursday this week.
